Women's ReportWould you like your campus to be free of sexist advertising? The women’s collective is currently organising a campaign to speak out against and stop sexist advertising on campus. This includes the objectification of women to sell alcohol and head hunting of ‘Jim Beam Girls’ during o’week. Sexist advertising reinforces the misconception that women are objects whose sole purpose is to please men. Newcastle University is not a place for such preposterous and unacceptable fallacies. Get sexist ads off our campus now! Contact the collective for more information. On a much more positive note, the Women’s Collective hosted International No Diet Day on Tuesday 2 May. This event was enjoyed by all who attended. On No Day Diet the Women’s Collective and others around the world spoke out against eating disorders, objectification of women and size discrimination. Great performers, fantastic speakers and some yummy food to enhance the message of the day. The collective is also currently involved in organising Newcastle’s Reclaim the Night. Reclaim the Night is an event where women march together in the streets to speak out against violence and assert out right to safety. The event also seeks to dispel myths surrounding the many types of violence that are inflicted upon women. Planning meetings recently started for the event in October. Keep you eyes out for further information. Interested in any of the above? Come along to our collective meetings, Tuesdays at 12pm in the Women’s Room at NUSA. Can’t make it?
