2. Freedom/Slavery

From Ned's Desk

|

There are so many philosophical discussions about freedom, that is would be easy to fill a page with them. But that would bore me shitless, and most of you probably

wouldn't read it. Besides, there are plenty of great articles discussing real freedom - or lack of it - in today's society, further on in this edition. Read them instead.

In putting together this edition I’ve thought about many kinds of slavery; African slavery, African American slavery, Aboriginal slavery, child slavery, sweatshops, the slave trade. Our great monuments were built by slaves, our great walls, our pyramids, hell; even Newcastle was built by convicts doing forced labor.

Left & Leaving

Going Home:

I’m on my way: back to a place where the heat compounds in the stiff air around my temples and wears me down over hours not days til I can’t stand to be in this place any longer.

Better Than This

Ouch! The sun’s in my eyes. Where am I?

Sleeping bag, trees, the musty smell of a fire in a drum mingled with
pot smoke…. Oh yeah, I remember now… and so does my stomach.

Really Freedom, or Just Slavery?

|

What is Freedom?

Funk and Wagnall’s Dictionary describes it as “ 1.The state or condition of being free; the condition of enjoying civil liberties. 2. Political autonomy 3. Liberty from bondage or slavery.”

Abortion

|

Abortion is a complex issue. Unfortunately it is often related to women's freedom. I see this as somewhat insulting. I have had an abortion, and both before and after the procedure, I felt anything but liberated as a woman. I did have the freedom of choice to end my pregnancy, but two years later I still feel that if I had the ultimate freedom, I would now be the mother of an eighteen month old child.

Uncertainty

She smells like cigarettes and salt-and-vinegar chips. The oddest combination Shannon has ever encountered.

A beautiful little brunette angel sits next to the woman. It seems odd to describe a young boy as brunette, but that’s what he is.

President's Report

Isn’t it funny how you appreciate the worth of something more when it is taken away from you? That’s the feeling I think we’re going to experience next semester when the Government’s VSU legislation will be implemented throughout Australian universities. In a very real way those of us that are preparing a restructure of NUSA are feeling that sense of loss already. It seems that the more I have been engaged in the process of revisioning and restructuring of NUSA the more I realize the benefit of the Universal Student Unionism (USU) we are about to lose. Let me explain that realization.
